BEFORE CLAIMING A HISTORIC FIRST WITH IRAN, REMEMBER THE 2015 NUCLEAR DEAL
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Recall the 2015 JCPOA nuclear accord before framing recent diplomacy with Iran as a historic first, proving successful negotiations have precedent.

In 2015, President Barack Obama’s administration and international partners negotiated the Iran nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA. The agreement required Iran to reduce its enriched uranium stockpile by 98%, limit enrichment activities, and accept international monitoring. In January 2016, inspectors verified that Iran had completed the required steps for implementation.

The agreement was achieved through diplomacy and economic sanctions, without launching a bombing campaign to secure the deal.
