Kirk was speaking to a large crowd as part of his “American Comeback Tour” when a single gunshot struck him in the neck. Witnesses described an immediate eruption of panic as students and attendees screamed, dropped to the ground and rushed toward exits. Video from the event showed Kirk collapsing beneath a tent marked “American Comeback” as people around him scrambled for safety. More than 3,000 people were reportedly at the event. The shooting occurred as Kirk was responding to a question involving gun violence and mass shootings. Authorities later identified the suspect as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who was arrested after investigators released images and sought the public’s assistance.
