Donald Trump became the first former president in United States history to face federal criminal charges arising from alleged conduct following his departure from office.
The indictment, brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, centers on actions prosecutors say were taken in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election and the certification of its results. Federal prosecutors charged Trump with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
