WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump expressed optimism on June 1 that the United States and Iran could reach an agreement within days to extend a fragile ceasefire and reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. His comments offered a hopeful assessment of negotiations, even as regional fighting and unresolved diplomatic disputes threatened to derail the process.
In a telephone interview with ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl, Trump said discussions with Tehran were progressing despite what he described as a temporary setback involving the conflict in Lebanon.
